David French: The moral questions at the heart of the Gaza war

As Israeli soldiers mass outside the Gaza Strip, preparing to launch a ground invasion that could lead to extraordinarily intense urban combat, there is a community of people who know what these soldiers are about to face. And that community knows that there is no way through the fight without sorrow, confusion and terrible heartbreak.American veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan know both the necessity of confronting a force like Hamas, which President Joe Biden called “pure evil,” and the horrifying choices that decision entails. And we know that discussions of law and tactics — as important as they are — provide only partial answers. There is no way to escape the moral challenge of war.As a former JAG (or Judge Advocate General’s Corps) officer embedded with a combat arms unit in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, I know that you can’t simply merge law and tactics and declare that everything that is legally and tactically sound is also moral, much less wise.We veterans know that th...98.3 TRY Social Dilemma: Would You Return Potato Chips If They Were Crushed?

My husband is telling me I'm being petty about something, but I think my point is very valid, so we thought we would bring it to you. I recently did my weekly grocery shopping and one of the items was a bag of my favorite potato chips. I have made it a point to always go to a register with a cashier instead of self-checkout. Anyway, I checked out with the cashier and another person was bagging my groceries. When I got home, I found my potato chips underneath a bag of apples and the chips were crushed to a certain extent. I was really ticked off. I wanted to go back to the store and get another bag or a refund. My husband told me I was being petty and that the chips will taste the same if they're small pieces or big chips. I think I'm right, what do you th...Off the Beaten Path: T&J Soap

Dear Amy: My husband and I have been married for 14 years (his third marriage, my second). We are very happy. We each have two adult children. His 42-year-old son, “Tony,” recently divorced with a preschooler, has always had issues.Last Father’s Day, my husband’s children and grandchildren gathered at our house.Tony, who has a drinking problem, started drinking beer early.I was busy attending to the group and wasn’t really paying attention to the amount he was consuming. (Plus, he’s a grown man; I’m not responsible for him.)Later, Tony decided that he and his child would spend the night at our house.I fed, bathed, and put the child to bed, still not realizing that he was continuing to drink.I went to bed, but was awakened by Tony and my husband arguing loudly. I told them both to go to bed.My husband walked into our bedroom and Tony followed. Then suddenly, he punched his father with a closed fist, knocking him over!He immediately ran out and punched a huge hole in our living room wal...Commission clears acquisition of Weltec by DWS and MunichRe

The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the acquisition of joint control of Weltec Holding GmbH (‘Weltec') of Germany by DWS Alternatives Global Limited (‘DWS') of the UK and Münchener Rückversicherungs-Gesellschaft Aktiengesellschaft in München (‘MunichRe') of Germany. The transaction relates primarily to the operation of biogas and biomethane plants and the trading of its outputs, including electricity, heat and fertiliser in Germany. The Commission concluded that the notified transaction would not raise competition concerns, given the limited impact in the European Economic Area and the companies' limited combined market position resulting from the proposed transaction. The notified transaction was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.More information is available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number M.11265.Russell: Careers over kids? A lot of adults look at parenthood the wrong way
Published Thu, 21 Nov 2024 23:09:04 GMT
Motherhood, as almost any mother will tell you, is one of the hardest things women do. Especially because she’s rarely doing just that. Most women are juggling it all: Careers, intimate relationships, friendships, health, home, and then, of course, the kids. This could be part of the reason why a new Pew Research report, “Public Has Mixed Views on the Modern American Family,” showed that men and women are choosing their careers over having children. But it’s not the whole picture, and it’s too bad for society and for potential parents. Only about 26% think having kids is an essential part of fulfillment and just 23% think being married remains part of a key component of happiness. Americans now think high job satisfaction and close friendships are more fulfilling than being married or being a mom or dad. In fact, over 70% of people said having a career will help them achieve life fulfillment. This is unfortunate. There’s two things at play here, although both may...Bridge: Oct. 17, 2023

At Trick Two, dummy should lead a low diamond. When East’s ace appears, South can win four diamonds, two spades, two hearts and one club.Suppose East played a low diamond. If South’s king held, he could switch to clubs. If instead South’s king lost to West, South could win the spade return and take the queen of diamonds; if the jack fell, he would be home. If both defenders played low diamonds, South could ...Johnson & Johnson: Q3 Earnings Snapshot
