Slim rain chances Monday, but not as hot

Slim rain chances Monday, but not as hot AUSTIN (KXAN) -- We all cooled off, but we didn't all get rain. Rainfall amounts ranged from nothing to almost a full inch in parts of Central Texas. Rain chances drop down to just 10% for the rest of the night as drier weather settles in. CENTRAL TEXAS RAINFALL TOTALS As the rain and rain cooled air approached, temperatures dropped from 106º to 82º within just one hour in Austin early Sunday evening. This was one of the biggest 1 hour temperature drops in Austin history! Our official high on Sunday in Austin at Camp Mabry was 109º, but the 110º at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is the second hottest temperature they've ever recorded and a new record for the date.Showers continue to fade with the loss of daytime heating and the rest of the night will be mostly dry with lows in the upper 70s and low 80s.The above-mentioned cold front will knock temperatures down closer to 100º or the upper 90s on Monday and Tuesday, but most areas will be back up to triple digits again on W...

Could PDO mess with our wet El Niño?

Could PDO mess with our wet El Niño? AUSTIN (KXAN) — While we've talked about ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) at length over the past year, there's another player in our weather that we're watching this year...PDO.PDO stands for Pacific Decadal Oscillation and it can influence the amount of precipitation we get in Central Texas.Pacific Decadal OscillationThe Pacific Decadal Oscillation is quantified by a number that represents three things:The strength of the Aleutian Low;Kuroshiro Current: Ocean current that changes over the course of decades; andThe reemergence of pre-summer water temperature anomalies.Pacific Ocean sea surface temperature anomalies (Blue is colder than normal)Why do we care?As we've told you there's a relationship between ENSO and rain here in Central Texas. When ENSO is positive (El Niño phase) we get more rain. Well, there's a rain relationship with PDO too. The more positive PDO is, the wetter our weather is. The more negative PDO is, the less rain we see.PDO/ENSO and Precipitation (NOAA/Clim...

Vikings just wrapped up the preseason. Whose stock is up? Whose stock is down?

Vikings just wrapped up the preseason. Whose stock is up? Whose stock is down? It’s pretty clear how Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell looks at the preseason. Though he sees some value in exhibition games, O’Connell would rather eat his hat than play his starters in a game that doesn’t count. That was on display when the Vikings hosted the Arizona Cardinals in the preseason finale Saturday at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Vikings had more than 40 players on the sideline without pads, including starting quarterback Kirk Cousins, receiver Justin Jefferson, pass rusher Danielle Hunter and safety Harrison Smith, among so many others. The lack of star power throughout the preseason games did give some young players on the roster a chance to shine. Here’s a look at whose stock is up and whose stock is down ahead of cutdown day this week.UpJaren Hall (quarterback): Though he’s buried behind Cousins and backup Nick Mullens on the depth chart, Hall still seems to have the inside track at making the 53-man roster. Easy recipes you have to make before summer ends By Krysten Chambrot, The New York TimesWhile it may feel like we’re deep in the dog days, soup and braises will soon be upon us. Seize the moment and make these new recipes: Each is simple and summery, full of seasonal produce and bright flavors, so you can soak up every last bit of the season.Crispy Chicken Thighs With Charred ZucchiniBy Ham El-WayllyChar your vegetables. It brings the best out of many brassicas, including broccoli and cabbage, but also summer squash such as zucchini. All too often zucchini can fall a little flat, but charring caramelizes the natural sugars that are present in the zucchini, enhancing their sweetness and adding a hint of smoky flavor. This is the perfect, punchy weeknight dinner, as the pumpkin seed dressing comes together entirely in the blender while the chicken finishes cooking in the oven.
