Lucas: Healey needs to set limits on incoming migrants

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 15:45:20 GMT

When in Rome, do as the Romans do.And that is to ship illegal immigrants someplace else.Gov. Maura Healey should take notice. In Italy’s case it is to send them across the Adriatic Sea to Albania where they will be held until they are processed and potentially sent back to where they came from. And that place is Libya, where fortunes are made sending immigrants from Africa and the Mideast who have flocked there seeking sea passage to Italy. Once there they pay smugglers to ferry them on often rickety boats across the Mediterranean Sea to Italy.Italy, like the rest of Europe—not to mention the United States—has been overwhelmed with illegal immigrants. Unlike the U.S., however, European countries have begun to crack down on illegal immigration.Once in Italy, a gateway to the rest of Europe, the illegal immigrants, under European Union regulations, are safe from immediate deportation and are allowed to apply for asylum. THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Human rights lawyers went to court in the Netherlands on Monday to call for a halt to the export of fighter jet parts to Israel that could be used in attacks on Gaza. The organizations allege that delivery of parts for F-35 jets makes the Netherlands complicit in possible war crimes being committed by Israel in its war with Hamas. The civil case in The Hague opened as the Israeli military renewed calls for mass evacuations from the southern town of Khan Younis, where tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians have sought refuge in recent weeks, as it widened its ground offensive and bombarded targets across the Gaza Strip. The rights lawyers want The Hague District Court to issue an injunction banning the exports of F-35 parts that are stored in a warehouse in the town of Woensdrecht.“The state must immediately stop the delivery of F-35 parts to Israel,” lawyer Liesbeth Zegveld told the court.Citing government documents, Zegveld said that Dutch customs a...
