Rockies Mailbag: Grading the C.J. Cron and Randal Grichuk trade to Angels

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 11:08:30 GMT

Denver Post sports writer Patrick Saunders with the latest installment of his Rockies Mailbag.Pose a Rockies — or MLB — related question for the Rockies Mailbag. We kick off this Rockies Mailbag with two similar questions regarding the Rockies’ trade of first baseman C.J. Cron and outfielder Randal Grichuk to the Angels for pitching prospects Jake Madden and Mason Albright.Long-time reader and fan of your writing and coverage of the Rockies. Can you explain why the Rockies gave $2 million to the Angels for a recent All-Star first basemen (C.J. Cron) and a power-hitting, all-around outfielder (Randal Grichuck) when they only received two minor-league pitching prospects in return? It gives me a little PTSD (Re: the Nolan Arenado trade). Is this a good trade for the Rockies? Thanks.— Kevin, DenverPatrick, was trading C.J. Cron and Randal Grichuk to the Angels the best move we could’ve made at the deadline? I mean, giving up those two bats, plus $2 million,...

Opinion: Another massive fire will happen. We need to act.

In a 1992 interview, novelist Cormac McCarthy told The New York Times that, in regard to housing, “Three moves is as good as a fire” – the moves being changes of address, the fire being a housefire. Our situation 28 years later involved both a wildfire and three moves. The Creek fire of September 2020 – at that time the largest single-source wildfire in California history by acreage – destroyed our home and our community of Pine Ridge, just south of Shaver Lake in the Sierra Nevada mountains.  The three moves involved, first, our evacuation from Pine Ridge to a hotel in Fresno, then to what our insurance company called “temporary housing” (also in Fresno), then our recent relocation to the Denver area, where my wife has family. When I hear now that Xcel Energy, Colorado’s largest power provider, is disputing the conclusions of the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office that a faulty Xcel Energy power line was one of two sources of the Marshall fire on Dec. 30, 2021 – and that Xcel is now bei...

Letters: The male vs. female athletes debate — biologically better, or just biologically different?

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 11:08:30 GMT

Biologically better athletes, or just biologically different?Re: “Level the playing field?” July 23 commentaryPut a female athlete side by side with a male athlete of the same age, height and weight. Because of sex differences, the male will have a larger heart, greater lung capacity, greater muscle mass, more red blood cells, and less body fat, all of which give males performance advantages over females. These differences are obvious to most people, which is why most people believe it’s unfair and perhaps unsafe for men to compete against women in sports. Many sports maintain restricted categories based on weight or age differences, such as separating welterweights from heavyweights, and seniors from juniors. But why should females have a restricted category just because their bodies are different than males?Make girls compete with boys from the very start, as opinion editor Megan Schrader suggests, so girls never see themselves as different than boys. When they ca...
